My 2023 short film "Days" explores the subjective (POV) shot, a concept discussed film theory. In the film, I use POV shots to highlight differing perspectives, showcasing how our understanding of characters’ emotions can be shaped by the lens through which we view them. The film follows three individuals— a white man, an Indian man, and a Black woman— as they walk through a space, each encountering a homeless man who interacts with them based on their physical attributes. By combining subjective and objective shots, I emphasize how race and gender influence daily experiences and interactions these daily realities should be recognized on screen. This was a quick assignment, but in this and in all of my works for courses, I always aim to include a positive message with a consistent theme of striving toward equality. The film challenges the marginalization of subjective shots in cinema but also challenges the marginalization of black women. I draw attention to the reality that Black women, in particular, often face increased risks and unsafe encounters from interacting no different than anyone would. By revealing the characters' attributes after their interaction (with the ‘danger’)— first through a mirror shot and later through objective angles—I show how subjective (POV) shot is with the objective shot of the subject, giving a full scope perspective of the character’s perspective. This combination gives character details that shape their interactions. A perspective that is very important to understand character connections, in turn helping me relate more to the viewer. This is a short clip from a 2024 promotional video I edited for my video editing production class. I included it in my reel to highlight my strong influence in rhythmic editing. Rhythmic editing is a technique I hold close to my creative process, as it effectively gauges the emotional response of viewers. By matching cuts or actions to sound effects or intricate music cues, I create a rhythm that draws the audience in and enhances their engagement with the content. This style not only captivates viewers but also allows me to communicate emotion in a powerful, almost subconscious way. I plan to continue integrating rhythmic editing into my future works, as it remains an incredibly attractive and dynamic method for storytelling.

This film, created in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, marks one of my earliest forays into filmmaking. It serves as a public service announcement, weaving psychological motivation into its narrative while also addressing critical issues like racial injustice and our collective responsibility in combating it. This work laid the foundation for my academic and creative focus, with race theory in film and psychology becoming central to my specialization during my studies.

In 2022, I created this short film as part of an early production course at Pace University. Collaborating closely with my crew and fellow students, I gained hands-on experience with various cameras and production techniques. Our task was deeply personal: to write and direct a short film that resonated so strongly with us it felt like second nature. Collaborating on each other’s films and my project, By the end of my course, I took on every role of a four-person crew—director, 1st Assistant Director/set designer, camera operator, and editor. My film, The Best Part, served as a prelude to my personal brand. Through intricate shots and varying angles, I explored how the process of getting ready each day—choosing how to present myself to the world—was a world of its own. This film highlighted my perspective on self-expression, showcasing the artistry in something as routine as a morning ritual. Reflecting on this project, I now recognize it as a turning point. It was during this time that I began to truly understand the significance of pouring into myself. While a five-minute “Get Ready With Me” may initially seem vain, this film was far more than that. I transformed a small three-roommate dorm into an immersive world through a carefully developed shot list, inviting viewers into a deeply personal space. Piece by piece, my confidence grew. The film emphasized how, even if I can’t control my day, I can control how I start it. This realization continues to influence my creative work and personal growth.

This 2024 digital short was created as an assignment for my film editing class. Shot on an iPhone, it demonstrates my ability to apply proven cinematography techniques, such as the 90-degree rule, while intentionally bending and breaking these conventions for creative effect. Despite the limitations of working with limited time and a single scene, I curated a reaction-driven silent piece that focuses on capturing subtle emotional responses. The project highlights the use of reaction shots and rhythmic editing to create a dynamic experience, showing that even with modest equipment, thoughtful cinematography and production quality can be maintained.
